Engaging with Infants and Toddlers through Respectful and Peaceful Care – Part 1, 2023

Children move, explore, wonder, play, and learn with their whole being: their minds, bodies, and hearts. Adults can support this learning with a careful and caring approach that understands and respects the importance of children’s movement, thinking, and feeling. These online introductory workshops will explore the philosophy of Dr. Emmi Pikler, which advocates a peaceful and respectful approach to caring for babies and toddlers. Taught by world-renowned experts. Internationally Accredited by the Continuing Professional Development Certification Service.

Pikler® Intro courses are an introduction and do not count toward Pikler® Professional Certification.
Day 1, Care: Dr. Emmi Pikler proposed that being respectful with the young stems from the simple idea of considering each child as a unique individual from the first moment of life.
Day 2, Gross Motor Development: Freedom of movement not only results in outstanding gross motor development, but also a strong sense of competence within each baby who finds out that he can learn on his own and doesn’t need an adult to teach him how to move.
Day 3, Self-Initiated Play: A child’s life consists, in great part, of play; it is a fundamental need.
Objectives:
- Identify and understand the complexity of young children's growth and development.
• Understand the importance of the role of the caregiver.
• Acquire practical tools to use in their own environments, integrating concepts from the Pikler® Pedagogy that are more easily linked to their own cultural context.
• Identify the myelination process during care situations, gross motor development and self- initiated play - from the point of view of Neuroscience.
• Describe the maturation of the different areas of the central nervous system that influence the complexity of the baby's play, gross motor development and social interactions and future relationships with others.
Recordings of the sessions will not be offered due to copyrighted material.

If a cancellation occurs between MARCH 15 to APRIL 14, you will receive 50% refund. If your cancellation occurs before MARCH 14, you will be entitled to a 75% refund.

Dr. Katherine Bussey
Dr. Katherine Bussey, is a passionate infant and toddler specialist originally from New Zealand living in Melbourne, Australia working as a Research Fellow and lecturer. She has spent the last 20 years actively learning about and developing practice in early childhood education strongly influenced by the Pikler® approach and Magda Gerber’s Educaring Approach (RIE®).
She is the chairperson for ITANA http://www.itana.org.au and is in the final stages of the process of becoming a Pikler® professional. Katherine mentors and provides professional learning and development for educators, engaging in inspiring critical reflection, learning and growth in infant, toddler and early childhood teams.
Elsa Chahin
Elsa Chahin is an in-demand speaker, writer, teacher, and infant-toddler consultant, with more than twenty years of experience working with infants, children, youth, and adult populations around the globe. Chahin has served as a keynote speaker and presenter at over 200 national and international conferences and seminars on the topic of caring for babies with respect. She has also been featured as an online expert for early childhood development topics including at-risk, orphaned, abandoned, and children with learning disabilities.
As one of only two certified and accredited Pikler® trainers in North America, she is currently president of the internationally renowned nonprofit corporation, Pikler/Loczy USA, through which she carries on the mission of Dr. Emmi Pikler, that of raising healthy, happy children; and has worked with multicultural students. She is a gifted facilitator that brings her expertise in her consulting and advisory positions to new parents and professionals. She is also the co-founder of Ways of Being®️ with Master Pikler®️Trainer Ute Strub. Chahin is a gifted facilitator that brings her expertise in her consulting and advisory positions to new parents and professionals.
In addition to being a staunch advocate of early childhood education and development, Chahin, a former professional ballerina who brings her knowledge of movement to her work, is a RIE® (Resources for Infant Educarers) Associate, PITC (Program for Infant and Toddler Care) trainer, working group leader for World Forum Foundation™, and certified UCLA Lactation Educator. Her family is her driving force.
Dr. Paola Guraieb
Dr. Guraieb is a Medical Doctor and a specialist in Internal Medicine, Neurology and Neurophysiology. She has performed external rotations in hospitals around the world, including the Hospital Pitié-Salpêtriere in Paris; Hospital Clínicas José de San Martín in Buenos Aires, Argentina; and the Hospital Gregorio Marañón in Madrid, Spain. Dr. Guraieb was a fellow of the American Austrian Foundation in Salzburg, Austria. She is a Professor at UNAM (Universidad Autónoma de México) and the Universidad Panamericana, as well as several courses with over 500 students per semester.
Dr. Guraieb was a research fellow for the Carlos Slim Foundation for five consecutive years and has participated in the publication of chapters of medical books. She has been a lecturer for the annual meetings of the Mexican Academy of Neurology for 8 consecutive years. Dr. Guraieb is a board member at the Mexican Academy of Neurology, is an active member of the Association of Physicians of the National Institute of Medical Sciences and Nutrition "Salvador Zubirán", and of the ABC Society of Physicians, all in Mexico City. Additionally, Dr. Guraieb is a member of the Scientific Research Committee of Pikler / Lóczy USA with whom she participates giving workshops and scientific support.
Mrs. Angyal Till
Angyal has been a teacher and caregiver for forty two years. Presently she is a preschool teacher and mentor with the Catholic Charities head start organization in Phoenix Arizona. She prepares disadvantaged children for school by maximizing their potential for social and emotional competence resulting in an easier transition to kindergarten. Angyal follows the Reggio Emilia philosophical approach to children aged four and five with education provided through a holistic approach by working with the family.
She worked in the Pikler House “Loczy” between 1978 and 1983 where she provided love, attention and care to promote normal physical and mental development for newborns through six years old.
While working at the Pikler house she graduated in 1982 at the Health Care and Medical Nursing School in Budapest Hungary and became a registered Hungarian General Pediatric nurse and infant caregiver.
Angyal then worked in a daycare in Gyula Hungary until 2003 when she moved to Canada.
While working as a YWCA Daycare supervisor in Regina Saskatchewan Canada from 2005 through 2011 she earned her Early Childhood Bachelor’s Degree from SIAST, Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Science and Technology.
Angyal moved to Arizona in 2011 and has completed multiple child development trainings including children with special needs and Reggio Emilia (R.I.S.E.) Reggio Inspired Spaces That Empower.
